Local Business Internet Marketing 2013

Wow! What an incredible creation the internet is, It has opened up the whole world for business!

Whether you are a global business or a local brick and mortar business, keeping up with the latest internet marketing changes is imperative. Whether you like it or not, the internet is here to stay and is only going to get BIGGER!

Social media marketing was all the rage in 2012 and you should have a facebook page, twitter account, youtube channel and pinterest board (depending on your business) at the least.

2013 is heavily focusing on mobile. Is your website mobile friendly, how does it look on a smart phone? More and more people are using mobile for search and they want fast answers. When people search on desktop computers they have a little more time, maybe 5 to 8 seconds before they will click off to somewhere else, on mobile it’s a lot less, so you had better give people the information they are looking for. For example, if you have a restaurant, they will want to know location, contact phone number, menu and prices, that’s all.

If you have your own business you need to get up with the internet latest, or get left behind!

So many business owners believe that because they have a website, that’s enough, oh no, that’s the easy bit 🙂

Watch Out Another Google Update Is About To Hit!

Penguin 2.0 is cominggoogle penguin 2.0

Black hat marketers watch out!

Many people say, it’s never been better for businesses online, but then, they have been saying that every year, for as long as the internet has been with us. The one thing that has stayed constant, is the fact that great, unique content wins!

The internet is still like the wild west and Google is trying to bring order and calm, they chase the black hat gun slingers relentlessly, the problem is, innocent bystanders are getting gunned down 🙁

Google will get there in the end and until then, simply produce, as Matt Cutts explains, ‘Quality websites with great content that brings visitors back, again and again’

Another problem is the people who are starting search engine optimisation companies. People are paying thousands to these people, then their businesses are being ruined because they listen to these so called ‘SEO experts’ and let them loose on their websites.

Business owners be very careful! If one of these SEO experts say ‘We are going to to a backlinking campaign and not just any backlinking campaign, these back links are from high PR domains and pages’. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

Business owners, listen up, simply produce Fantastic, Unique Content, upload to your website, then add to the social networks. JOB DONE! Oh and do it often 🙂

Stop Whining And Make It Happen

philosophy-quote-siteOne of my internet marketing friends is always moaning and groanng, ‘Panda algorithm this, penguin algorithm that, Facebook has changed, youtube marketing is no good, PPC is a waste of time and money, bla bla bla 🙁 If he spent as much time on his business as he does whining, he would be a VERY rich man!

It has never been easier or cheaper, to start a business, or indeed promote your existing business.

There are literally hundreds of roads you can take with your online marketing endevours.

From blogging to PPC (pay per click) marketing. There is a multitude of advertising mediums for every type of business.

All your business needs is you or someone to take ACTION and the results will follow.

Where else can you start a business for a very minimal financial cost and have sales, customers, enquirees, optins almost immediately? A small amount of knowledge in say the new social media picture sharing site Pinterest and you can start marketing straight away.

Youtube has never been easier, it now has it’s own video editing interface, including music that you can add 🙂

Below is a video I made in under 10 minutes, I already had the pictures, so I simply added music and effects, titled the video with a keyword I know i can rank for, added tags and a description. I simply added my pinterest board link to the video as this was just a test video, although that is another good marketing tactic.

I love internet marketing because it is continually changing, so remember the famous Charles Darwin quote ~

It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.

Should Website Domain Names Contain Hyphens?

One hyphen doesn’t have a negative seo effect, but more than one hyphen does (according to google, if it has two or more, they believe you are hyphens-and-domain-namestrying to manipulate the search engines).

As far as branding and using your domain name on business cards, leaflets, video, press release, letter heads, etc. it does. I believe it cheapens the business and makes the company look less professional, but then again I have been in this industry for way too many years and I may (definately) have preconceived ideas of what a domain should be.

It would be a good idea to look at the fortune 500 and even the top 500 sites on alexa, then see how many have hyphens.

So, whether it is with hyphens or without hyphens, I wish you luck

In the video below Matt Cutts from Google talks about hyphens and underscores. Me personally, I would use neither, but hey, everyone has their own opinion 🙂

Facebook Graph Search WOW!

Facebook recently opened up Graph Search.  Facebook is now much more searchable. It’s just like a search engine, but the results are shaped by each Facebook Graph Searchuser’s social network of friends.

The Facebook Graph Search is a search engine (watch out Google) whose results are unique to you, the results are based on the people you are connected to and your location. It’s a way to discover stores that are close to you, find restaurants liked by your friends, hotels, holidays, etc.

For local businesses this is going to be HUGE and the opportunities to connect with potential clients and customers will be fantastic!

The Google Disavow Tool?

This could open a whole new can of online worms!google disavow

The majority of webmasters will probably never need this and should only worry about this new tool if they have been attacked by someone using a negative SEO campaign, where people build backlinks to your site from bad link sources with the sole intent of getting your site slapped (nasty people :(), or have seen a dramatic drop in traffic and rankings after April 24, 2012, which was when Google unleased Penguin 1.0. If you were hit by Penguin, it probably will be because of your backlinking structure and it could be where people have simply used one keyword for all their keyword hypertext backlinks, so the google disavow tool will enable you to remove or change these links.

* Remember* You really should have a diverse backlinking strategy and structure, using different keyword structures within the keyword hypertext backlinks and also using just your domain name as the backlink, with post/page name extensions.

If you have had Google’s bad link warnings within Google’s webmaster tools, then this could be a good way of cleanng some of these bad backlinks.

*MY WARNING*

There is going to be people panicking and deleting backlinks like crazy! Do not be one of these people! There will be people that spend hours on this tool and it should only really be the people who have been severly slapped by the big G, because once you are in that Google dungeon, it’s hard to escape!

I have not described how to use the disavow tool in this article, instead I have Google’s links under the Matt Cutts video below 🙂

Matt Cutts explains the “Disavow links” feature of Google Webmaster Tools.

Exact Match Domains 2012

Google recently updated their algorithm, again 🙁 This time it was focusing on EMD’s or exact match domains.google seo

EMD’s are websites where the main keyword is the domain name. Eg. Keyword “Search Engine Ranking UK” and the domain would be “www.searchenginerankinguk.com”

Now it seems that the only EMD’s that are being hit, are the thin domains that are solely built to target one keyword, so they have it as the domain, categories, page titles, post titles, descriptions and hyper text backlinks using that main keyword and no outgoing links.

The EMD’s that have not been hit (so far), have great useful content and have a diverse structure using many related keywords, videos, pictures, pages and posts, that are using different related keywords, alt tags and descriptions. They have a backlink structure that looks natural and doesn’t just have the keyword hyperlink pointing back to the domain, they also seem to have outgoing links pointing to authority websites.
exact match domain penalty.

Another great Google algorithm update, that gives people producing quality content a chance for people to find their content!
